In the blogLight: Kandee Johnson

Welcome to the 5th edition of In the blogLight!

Y’all know how much I love makeup. It is such an art to me and it is just another creative outlet that you can tinker with daily. With that being said, I discovered the wonderful “beauty” world of Kandee Johnson a while ago and, needless to say, have been hooked ever since!

How I found it:

One of my friends posted a link to one of Kandee’s YouTube videos on FaceBook. I can’t remember the video now (I’ve pretty much watched them all at this point haha) but it had something to do with tips on applying makeup by a professional makeup artist. Ok, it had my attention at “makeup”. So I clicked and watched. And then, 2 hours and 20 videos later, I was losing my marbles for makeup all over again.

Why I LOVE it:

As previously mentioned, my introduction to Kandee Johnson was through her YouTube tutorials and then, later, discovered her blog. I LOVE watching her tutorials for a plethora of reasons:

She is a wealth of beauty knowledge and seems to sincerely and genuinely enjoy sharing it with others. Someone with her skill level and training has every right to hoard their knowledge for themselves, yet she does the complete opposite; I appreciate a person with such a giving quality about them.

She is the complete opposite of “stuffy” or “self-righteous”. Her teaching method is always thorough and helpful, never condescending. She covers the basics all the way to more advanced tips and tricks. Most of us think we already have the basics covered… and then she will show a completely different, more efficient method to doing something (like, say, shaping your eyebrows).

On a similar note, she has a fun, spunky personality in a down-to-earth sort of way. I can most certainly appreciate that!

She doesn’t hesitate to recommend products without the feeling that she has sponsors behind everything. In fact, in many of her tutorials she will recommend products that you can find at the drugstore. She doesn’t assume everybody uses (or can afford) high end beauty products. Amen to that.

Talent and Creativity galore! Some of my favorite tutorials are her “costume makeup”. For instance, she will replicate the costume makeup for Alice in Wonderland or Avatar… just for fun. I wish I would have known some of these tricks for past Halloween costumes! Now I can only hope that I will be invited some costume party so I can put these makeup tricks to practice! haha

Now for her blog!

Her blog is more than just makeup and hair… it is about life, circumstances and, more often than not, encouragement. I watched one of her videos explaining some hard times she had when she was first starting out in life on her own… and I was literally in tears. Literally. In. Tears. So many people let their experiences shape them into sour, cynical people. Kandee has done the exact opposite. She encourages. She is positive. She is optimistic and empathetic. Never judgmental. She relates to others’ trials by writing reflectively through her own experiences, all the while providing support to others. If I had one word to describe her, it would be inspiring.

Kandee is more than just makeup and beauty; she is an inspiration. She is a lemonade maker through the “lemons” of life. Her blog is an extension of that spirit and mentality. That, my friends, is refreshing. AND, just a bonus… Because even if her blog was strictly makeup and beauty, it would still be one of my favorites.
