It should come as no surprise that I have found a way to include yarn pom poms in my Valentine’s decor. Yes, I lose my marbles for pom poms. and hearts. and valentine’s. Which is why I love this DIY craft.
What you will need:
♥ A wire hanger… like the kind you get from the dry cleaner.
♥ Yarn. I used two different colors but you can use as many as you want. I won’t ask questions.
♥ Scissors.
♥ Something to hang the heart. I used tulle. Ribbon or yarn will be dandy, too.
♥ A wee bit of patience.
First things first.
Unravel the wire hangar and manually shape it into a heart. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Don’t worry about the small crinks. We just need the basic shape… the pom poms will work their magic and do the rest.
Now let’s make the pom poms!
1. Ravel the yarn around your hand around 50 times. You can do more if you want really full pom poms.
2. Slide your hand out off the raveled yarn.
3. Cut a piece of yarn long enough to tie around the raveled yarn, with plenty of extra slack.
4. Tie the yarn in the center. Flip it, and tie it on the back side as well. Double knot nice and tight.
5. Slide your scissors through the loops and snip.
6. Hold onto the two long yarn slack (that you tied the raveled yarn with) and begin to cut the yarn down into a full, round ball of pom. Be careful NOT to cut the two strings that you are holding on to.
7. Pom should look something like this when you are done cutting. You can leave the yarn longer if you like the frilly look better, or shorter if you want it to look more like a dandelion.
8. Tie the two strings tightly onto the wire hanger. Double knot.
9. Snip the extra slack.
10. Continue to make pom poms in every and any color your heart desires.
11. If you are feeling particularly adventurous, ravel two colors at once 25 times instead of 50.
12. The result will tickle you pink. Seee? Pink. Anyone? Is this thing on? Nevermind.
13. Keep on truckin’ around that wire.
14. And you will end up with this.
15. Tie on tulle to the wire to hang. (or any other ribbon, yarn, rope, etc. I chose red tulle because you can’t get any more Valentine’s than that. And it is borderline cheese to quite cheesy. And I like cheese. in moderation of course.)
16. Arrange pom poms over the tulle to hide where it was tied.
Ta-da!
I made two different wire hearts as you can see. One just had solid red pom poms and solid pink pom poms. With the other heart, I mixed it up and used the solid red, solid pink and a red/pink mix. Somehow, the red/pink mix pom pom reminds me of a sock monkey. I don’t know where in my mind that I have made this connection, but I have. Yes, the depths of my mind are mysterious and baffling.
This is a sweet little Valentine’s craft that is super easy to make.
Not a lot of fuss and quite inexpensive.
And that is a winning craft in my book!
