Christmas Pom Pom Wreath Tutorial

Ahhh… the beloved yarn pom pom. About a level one on the difficulty scale… and perhaps a level 9.8 on the fantastically adorable scale. Without a closer look, you probably wouldn’t even be able to tell that this Christmas wreath is a gazillion pom poms working together to bring some Christmas cheer into your home. But give credit where credit is due… these pom poms deserve a little recognition for providing a fantastic alternative to the traditional Christmas wreath. And, rest assured, no pine trees were killed in the making of this wreath. Perhaps some grass for the hay wreath, but no pine trees. ;)

Well, what are we waiting for! Lets make a Christmas Pom Pom Wreath!

You will need:

Two skeins of green yarn. I made the mistake of calling it “spools” of yarn in my mother’s presence the other day. The shame was incalculable.  My defense… “my mother apparently did not teach me the difference”. Touche mother? ;) Back to the skeins of yarn. I used two similar but slightly different shades of green for depth. You can use one shade if you prefer… I won’t yell at you or socially shame you publicly. I promise. ;)

One hay wreath. Any size your heart desires. I used a 14 inch.

On your marks. Get set. GO!

1

Do not unwrap your hay wreath plastic. There is no sense in getting hay everywhere for no reason. Trust me on this.

Start making pom poms:

Wrap yarn around 4 fingers around 25-30 times. The more times you wrap… the fuller the pom pom.

2

Slide the yarn off of your fingers.

3

Cut another long piece of string and place underneath the wrapped yarn.

4

Tie tightly.

5

I always tie once, flip the wrapped yarn and tie again and double knot on the other side. I suppose I am a little bit of an overachiever. (and, perhaps, have OCD)

6

Make a gazillion pom pom balls. In reality, I made 100 for the wreath…but keep in mind that I am readily admitting a tinge of OCD. I wanted a full, full wreath… but you can judge what is full enough for you as you assemble. I would say you need a minimum of 50 pom poms, however.

7

Tie the long piece of yarn (that you tied around the wrapped yarn) around the hay wreath. Knot tightly.

8

Once tied onto the wreath, cut the loops in the center…. just slide your scissors through the loops (you can do a whole bunch at once) and cut. You should have a big ol’ pom pom!

9

Keep on truckin’! You have a whole bunch more pom poms to tie around that wreath!

10

And when you are finished… it should look something like this:

11

I just love how the yarn looks like pine needles. It is so shag-e-delic. And I mean in a shaggy hook rug sort of way.

12

The two greens give some visual interest. (can you tell that I watch a little too much HGTV? And can you also tell that I’m not even sure what they mean exactly when they use those words so authoritatively?)

13

The wreath is technically done if you want just a natural (pretty sure that is not the right word) looking wreath. However, I wanted to kick it up a notch. So I added some big ol’ holly looking berries. Baammm!

18

If you want some holly berries… here is how:

14

Two fingers.

15

Same thing as the poms…

16

But don’t cut the loops! Cut the string you used to tie the pom and tuck the loose ends inside. A little ornament hook can be wrapped around the yarn and punched into the hay wreath. Very easy.

17

Peek-a-boo.

20

A few more holly berry friends…

19

I still wasn’t done. (OCD… kickin’ back in) So I crocheted a bow. I had to keep with the yarn theme… and although the bow isn’t shaggy… it was yarn.

23

I apologize for the quality of pictures for the bow… maybe next time I won’t take my pictures with a single lamp on from the other side of the room. ;)

Want one but don’t have time to make it?

Can’t stand the thought of making a gazillion pom poms?

They are available in my Etsy shop here!

22

Nevertheless, go deck your doors with wreaths and holly… fa la la la la la la la la la….

Tis the season to be Jolly!

fa la la la la la la la la la,
