Every dog has her day; today was mine.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out the Farley house loves aviation and all that it entails. Many assume that I love aviation because Jon is a pilot. Do I love that I get to hear all about his flying every day? You bet! Do I love that he can speak airplane fluently to me? Absolutely. Do I live vicariously through his flying? You better believe it. God generously blessed me with Jon’s dream of flying… because it was my dream too.
The first time watched Top Gun… I was hooked. Not just “this is a good movie I think I will watch it again” type of hooked, but something stirred deep within my soul. A desperate longing to fly. I felt like I missed it, I craved it, and I had never even been in an airplane before! It was the moment that I felt like I had a calling. A purpose. A passion that would never die but would be pushed into remission time and time again for the next 10 years of my life.
Without question, I wanted to be a Navy fighter pilot. Not Air Force. Not commercial.
OMG girl, this is awesome!!! Did he get to take you up yesterday?????!!!!
I know what you mean about blonde hair being pricey….it’s SOOOOO expensive!!!!!!! I just can’t go brunette though!
Cant wait to read part 2!
I so enjoyed the “follow your dream” story. Your narrative is very inspiring. How wonderful that with obstacles you managed to get into the skies (LOL! your dream would be a nightmare to me).
I loved the SA Zoo post…cured a bit of the “Texas homesickness” which English Cottage in Georgia has been suffering.
This is just awesome, Melissa! You are my idol. Seriously! If I was solo and looked next to me I’d have a panic attack! You amaze me. AND, you look amazing in all the photos!! EVEN blonde!!

I loved reading part 1 of your love of flying. I was bitten by the bug when Top Gun was king, but somehow just never got of the ground. It didn’t help that I get as sick as a dog on small planes and so anxious on big ones that I need a sedative. It must be so thrilling to be the one behind the stick!
What a cool way to use your degree too. Mine is in Psych as well and I just can’t see myself in a clinical setting. Time for me to find something different or go back to school.
You go Maverick!
WOW! I had no idea! That is an amazing story. I bet you were in heaven on friday:) I had a blast. Wish I ran into you!
Aviation is one of those things that once it bites you life is never the same again.
Being slightly older I watched “Sky King” and knew right then and there that I had to become a pilot and fly airplanes.
My wife is also a pilot, so we too get to share our flying stories, and she assures me she never gets tired of mine (although I do!)
Great Post!
